At selected Canadian locations, low power weather broadcasts (without the alert tone) are transmitted on the regular FM or AM band. A Weatheradio receiver is not required to hear the broadcasts on regular AM or FM bands.

The new generation of programmable Weatheradio receivers are sophisticated enough to recognize the embedded codes for specific types of events and for specific local areas. Messages that don't apply are screening out.
