Weather Channel Canada

This page will help you find the frequency on which a local weather channel Canada transmitter broadcasts, on Canada's Weatheradio network.

Weatheradio Canada broadcasts on the following frequencies 162.400, 162.425, 162.450, 162.475, 162.500, 162.525, and 162.550 MHz.

Please note that Canada and the United States Weather Radio channel frequencies are identical.

Therefore, all weather radio receivers bought in Canada or in the United States will work equally well in both countries.

At selected Canadian locations, low power weather broadcasts (without the alert tone) are transmitted on the regular FM or AM band. A Weatheradio receiver is not required to hear the broadcasts on regular AM or FM bands.

Normal broadcast range from a Weatheradio transmitter is approximately 60 kilometres (40 miles). However you may have to be located much nearer depending on terrain, quality of your Weather Radio receiver and its antenna.

Weather Alerts

Severe Thunderstorm and Tornado Warnings are accompanied by a 1050Hz warning tone to trigger basic tone alert receivers.

The "Specific Area Message Encoding" (SAME) functionality is available on Weatheradio Canada's broadcasting network.

Two sets of codes are embedded in broadcast alerts to...

  • identify the nature of the event,
  • and define the affected area.

The new generation of programmable Weatheradio receivers are sophisticated enough to recognize the embedded codes for specific types of events and for specific local areas. Messages that don't apply are screening out.

Consult your user manual for details on how to program your receiver.

Please note that all SAME-enabled weather radio receivers are pre-programmed to alert you of a
  • Severe Thunderstorm Warning
  • Tornado Warning
This feature cannot be disabled.
